Daniil Aleksandrovich Granin (1919−2017) was a writer, screenwriter and public figure. He was born into the family of a forester on January 1, 1919. In 1940, he graduated from the Electromechanical Faculty of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, worked at the Kirov Factory, from there he went to the front and served until the end of the war in tank forces. From 1946 to 1950 he worked at Lenenergo and a research institute. Literary activity began in the late 1940s, his first publication was the story "Option Two".

The early works of Granin were devoted to scientific and technical progress, research scientists. Among his famous works are the novel “The Seekers” (1954), “I Am Going in a Thunderstorm” (1962), the novel “The Blockade Book” (in collaboration with Ales Adamovich, 1987), the novel “My Lieutenant” (2011) about the horrors of war. Many of Granin’s works on World War II were translated into German and published in Germany.

Granin was an active public figure, his opinion was listened to when making decisions on socially significant issues. He was elected a people's deputy of the USSR (1989–1991), initiated the creation of the Leningrad Mercy Society, and became chairman of the board of the D.S. International Charitable Foundation.
